Our goal: to make it to Colchester from London\nwith our car, our wits, and no damage to either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started out just\nafter lunch and instead of doing the sensible thing and getting\nlunch, we hit the road straight away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drive out of London\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qpvmtz-74OQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving in London is\nobviously done on the other side of the road from what we\u2019re used\nto. So that\u2019s a thing. It\u2019s also all listed in miles instead of\nkilometers. Stops for pedestrians are different. There are some\ndifferences in street signage, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this might\nmake you wary of driving in London, but as someone who only drives\nmaybe twice a year when I rent a car, I can tell you now it\u2019s no\nbig deal. Sure, you have to reverse a lot of things. Keep left if\nyou\u2019re a slower vehicle (but it\u2019s still to the outer edge of the\nroad rather than the inner edge for faster vehicles, same as North\nAmerica.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic tends to\nactually let you merge, which is nice. In Toronto you have to really\nwant it. Wedging your car in between two others and hoping neither of\nthem want the trouble of a fender bender. In London there\u2019s none of\nthat. First of all the congestion charge seems to keep traffic away\nexcept in some circumstances. Secondly, it seems like they\u2019re a bit\nkinder to everyone on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we were out of\nLondon, the highways to exit the city were all marked with speed\nlimits and cars seemed to roughly stick to them. Once outside of the\ngreater London area, it seemed to be a free-for all.  When getting\nonto the biggest part of the major highway it said it was a speed\nvariable zone, and I did not see a single other speed posted until I\narrived at another town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I simply did what I\nalways do and followed the flow of traffic. It\u2019s the safest thing\nto do, and I have yet to find an officer to give me grief over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria had a\nmessage from her mother about a farm where they had stayed, so we\ntook a little detour to go see that. It was down some single lane\nroads where you have to pull off to the shoulder, or back up to the\nnext spot where you can if traffic comes the other way. Thankfully\nthis didn\u2019t happen, and we soon found the farm! It was <strong>just <\/strong>on\nthe other side of a railway crossing. When trains cross here, it\nseems like they get their money\u2019s worth for putting the sign down,\nabout 4 trains, maybe more, passed us by before the gates came back\nup. At this point there was a big line of cars behind us. I pulled\noff left to let Victoria take some pictures. After that, we hit the\nhighway again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-instagram wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B2w3AOeAnyj\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We drove for quite a\nfew miles and went through many round-abouts. The rules seem simple.\nThere are lights at bigger ones to tell you when to join the circle.\nThe signs tell you which exit is which. If there are no lights,\nthere\u2019s a line where you wait until there\u2019s a gap and then you\njoin the circle, and exit whichever branch you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closer to Colchester\nthere were <strong>tons<\/strong> of\nroundabots. Every junction was a roundabout. They must be cheaper to\nconstruct and maintain than a typical north american overpass highway\ncrossing. Maybe not cheaper than a regular stop light, but apparently\nthis idea is better somehow. I\u2019m not seeing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThat said, round-abouts are nothing to be afraid of. The one at\nTrafalgar square was nothing special and the ones on the distant and\nunknown highways seemed more daunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nMy whole day was spent driving, which is why this log is and probably\nwill be heavily focused on driving, unless we stop for quite a while\nsomewhere. Today it was lightly raining and there was nothing\ninteresting to do that we knew of, except&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We\nhad a message from Victoria\u2019s mother about the house she lived in\nwhen she [Victoria] was\n4 years old! So we <strong>had<\/strong>\nto make a detour to find out what that looks like now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nThe town definitely had a slower pace than London, but still seemed\nbuilt-up in some ways. We found ourselves down an increasingly narrow\nand precarious drive until we reached a tiny car park, where I tried\nto turn around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nA lady who lived there told me how difficult it was going to be to\nget out of there, and gave us step-by-step guidance in getting out.\nIt was a huge help in getting out of there quickly. I would have\nfigured it out eventually, but she knew the size of the space and\nexactly how to turn to get a sedan out of there. Apparently she had\nhelped many people out of that same situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We told her Victoria had possibly lived in one of the houses on that street and they talked about that for a minute and we said thank-you and left, looking for a car park, which ended up being right at the end of the street. This was not 100%\nconsistent with what she had said before, but it was more of an\nomission. We were satisfied with our photos so we headed for the town\ncentre to see what that was like and find a place to eat our\nsandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" I had a hooded rain jacket from Muji\nwith me, so I flipped up the hood and kept mostly dry until the rain\npicked up. Then my jeans started to get a little damp, but not much.\nVictoria only had a hoodie on, but since we had a car, we just\nreturned to the car and were able to be dry again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div The roads as we neared\nour cabin got windier, stranger, and narrower. Each turn seemed to\nbring a new challenge and the distance to our next stop was actually\nabout as much as the distance between the edge of London and\nColchester. Maybe more. We seemed to go on so many winding paths\nthrough round-abouts and wavy roads, over a huge bridge, it seemed to\nnever end!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\nfinally arrived at the cabin, where I sit now, and Victoria decided\nwe had better go out and get dinner. I think she was getting hangry.\nI was ready to just relax. little bits and bobs, and many\nblackberries which were ripe and ready for the picking. Victoria\npicked them as we walked along. Her meal was huge and mine was pretty big, but\nthe right amount it seemed. A shower under the rain shower head was wonderful and\nwe\u2019re now both tapping away our adventures and relaxing.
